So, you went and got yourself that RV you’ve been dreaming about?
Now it’s time to shop around for the best Insurance coverage you can get for your money, Right?
When you have a special vehicle, like an RV, you do not want insurance that is generically for other types of vehicles. The main reason is that the coverage will not end up being what you need, but all too often you may not even know it until it is too late.
Here are three mistakes you want to avoid when you purchase your RV insurance.
1. Thinking All RV Insurance Policies Are the Same
If you get in too much of a hurry when you buy your RV insurance policy, you will probably learn the hard way that not all insurance policies are the same – of any kind of insurance. The main reason is because RV insurance companies want to differ some from what others offer, and some also want to stay away from having to pay for certain types of claims, which they may think are too costly.
An example of some things that may differ starts with Full-Timers RV insurance. If you live in your RV for 5 months or more each year (this time period may vary), you may be able to get Full-Timers Insurance. This coverage is exceptional for your needs and for your personal possessions when all you own is in your RV.
Other RV insurance policies may offer options for your coverage which other RV insurance companies may include as part of its package deal. You also want to look at how your RV will be replaced. Some companies may offer you the value (with depreciation), and others may agree to the purchase price. There are probably different options that you have.
2. Making Assumptions About Coverage You Do Not Have – But Wish You Did
One thing you want to watch out for is that you need to know that a homeowner’s insurance policy will not cover your RV for a number of things. This could include claims against externally attached accessories, your personal possessions inside the RV, liability and medical for visitors staying with you or injuries at the campsite, and emergency expenses if your RV breaks down while on vacation.
RV insurance can give you the coverage you need, but you will still need to shop around for the best coverage at an affordable price. Both will vary from one company to the next, and it is up to you to do the homework.
3. Paying More Than You Need to
Another mistake commonly made is to pay more than necessary for your RV insurance. While it may be possible to get cheap RV insurance, it is even more important that you get the appropriate coverage.
There are some discounts that you can get, just like with your auto insurance, but you will need to find out which ones your insurer offers. One RV insurance company may offer to give you $0 deductible after 5 years of no claims. Most of them will allow you to park your RV during the winter months enabling you to save hundreds of dollars on premiums during the winter months.
Also, if you take your RV out of the country, you will need to buy additional coverage for it.
